By Aaron Humes: With 102 murders recorded for all 2020, the murder rate for every hundred thousand residents was calculated at 24.33, the lowest in seven years.
But the task now is to consolidate that gain, as Belize still remains among the top ten for murders in Latin America and the Caribbean according to Insight Crime’s Homicide Round-up.
With murder rates trending down across Central America, Belize is now rated joint-sixth deadliest country in the region even with a population many times smaller than our neighbors.
Jamaica, with close to three million citizens, has a murder rate of 46.5 per hundred thousand, followed by Venezuela at 45.6; Honduras, 37.6; Trinidad and Tobago, 28.2; and immediate northern neighbors Mexico, at 27.
Belize is in fact tied with Colombia on the Insight Crime chart, followed by El Salvador at 19.7 per hundred thousand. Brazil comes in at #9 with a homicide rate of 19.3 for every 100 thousand inhabitants. Rounding out the top 10 is Puerto Rico, which had a rate of 16.5 for every 100,000 citizens.
January by our count has seen seven murders, a reduction from ten in 2020 and 12 in 2019.
