Mexico approves Russian COVID-19 vaccine

Posted: Wednesday, February 3, 2021. 10:41 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Mexican authorities have approved the Russian Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine for use.

The vaccine was approved after a study indicated that the vaccine was 91% effective.

The Mexican health ministry has signed a contract for 400,000 doses of the vaccine that will arrive this month.

The country has been hit hard by the pandemic with over 87% of hospitals full.

Mexico has reported about 159,500 test-confirmed deaths related to COVID-19, but excess-death estimates place the real toll at well over 195,000.

Ambulances are being told to wait in line for hours before hospitals can be assigned for patients.

Many families have opted to care for their own loved ones especially after realizing that the hospitals are filled.

The Russian vaccine is the 3rd to get emergency approval in Mexico after the regulating agency approved the Pfizer vaccine in December and AstraZeneca’s in January.

A dozen other countries have also approved the Russian vaccine for use.

The country has already given about 675,000 doses of Pfizer vaccine.
