By BBN Staff: After immense public outcry, the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Authority (KHMHA) officially announced today that it will undergo a review of the cost for personal protective equipment (PPE) being charged to patients receiving care at the hospital.

The hospital authority has been in the news since BBN broke the story last week, that patients have been receiving staggering bills due to PPE charges, which the hospital explained was “$200 per day.”

“While this figure is required to recover cost to sustain the supply of PPE’s, the KHMHA Board and Management along with the Ministry of Health & Wellness (MOHW) has started the process of reviewing with the aim to reduce cost to patients so as to maintain safe and affordable healthcare to the public,” the KHMHA said.

The hospital authority also explained that a team comprised of Medical Specialist, Nurses, Attendants, PCA’s, Domestic Auxiliary are assigned on a shift basis and each requires a full set of PPEs, which include a coverall, N-95 mask, goggles, gloves, boots, and disposable gowns, when they deliver care.

“Cost per set of PPE is approximately $20 Bzd, however the number of staff and changes of PPEs per shift determines the total cost at discharge. Example; Team of 5 persons pers shift x 2 shifts x $20 per set of PPE = $200.00 per day,” the KHMHA added.

Patients have contacted BBN to show that they have been charged as much as $4,800 for PPE’s alone. Many of these patients say that the figures being charged for the PPEs are unreasonably high and that they can’t afford to pay it.

Notably, Prime Minister John Briceno spoke on the issue just yesterday on the issue, saying that he would conduct an investigation and if the charge was unreasonable then something would have to be done.
