 Mennonite and mechanic plead guilty to drug offenses, get fines instead of jail time

By BBN Staff: A Mennonite farmer from Little Belize, Corozal, and a mechanic from Progresso, Orange Walk, escaped jail time today after they pleaded guilty to drug offenses.

The Farmer, Herman Friessen, 23, and his companion Geraldo Ivan Lino pleaded guilty when they appeared before Magistrate Khadeen Palma.

Friessen was charged with one count of possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply to another, with respect to 1.5 grams of cocaine found by police. He was fined $4,505 and given until September 30, 2021 to pay.

Meanwhile, Lino was fined a total of$4,410: with a fine of $3,000 plus a $5.00 cost of court in connection with 1,086 grams and $400 plus $5.00 for another 76 grams of cannabis. He was given until August and September 30, 2021, respectively to pay both fines and will get a total of 11 months jail time on both counts if he defaults on payment.

Police caught the duo with the drugs at a checkpoint in from of Manatee Lookout in Ladyville, Mile 9 on the Philip Goldson Highway on Monday.
