Mexican state police officers charged in connection with massacre

Posted: Thursday, February 4, 2021. 9:28 am CST.

By BBN Staff: At least 12 state police officers in Mexico have been charged in connection with the murders of 19 people, including Guatemalan migrants whose bodies were found shot and burned near the U.S. border in January, ABC News reports.

Officials announced that the 12 officers face charges of homicide, abuse of authority and making false statements.

The murders revived memories of the 2010 massacre of 72 migrants near the town of San Fernando in Tamaulipas.

The Mexican Attorney General did not indicate what the motive may have been but said that in the acts of January 22, 12 police officers participated.

According to the article, cartels in Mexico often charge migrant smugglers for crossing their territory, and kidnap or kill migrants whose smugglers have paid a rival gang.

The scene was found across the Rio Grande from Texas, an area that is known for turf battles between the Gulf cartel and old Zetas cartel.

In addition, the immigration department fired 8 agents after they allegedly seized the vehicle and then let it go.

Four of the bodies have been identified, 2 Guatemalans and 2 Mexicans.
