By BBN Staff: A former governor of Puebla, Mexico, Mario Marin has been arrested. Marin was charged with human rights violations in relation to the illegal arrest and torture of journalist Lydia Cacho who in her 2005 book had detailed the role of other powerful men in a pedophilia ring that preyed on young girls.
According to the Press Freedom organization, Articulo 19, Marin could face up to 12 years in prison for the charge of torture if convicted.
Marin requested to wait out the process under house arrest, the Associated Press reports.
That request was denied.
Cacho reportedly told a local radio that Marin gave the order for her to be tortured so she would recant what she published.
Despite Cacho’s allegations, Marin moved freely in public for years.
Until in 2019 when a judge issued a warrant for his arrest.
