By BBN Staff: Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise, Jose Abelardo Mai, continued his national tour of the agriculture sector by visiting the National Sheep and Goat Breeding Center in Central Farm, Cayo on Thursday, February 4th.

Joining the Minister of Agriculture on the tour was Ambassador Remus Li Kuo Chen of the Republic of China (ROC) on Taiwan, Deputy Counselor Bi Yin Chien, and other members of Ambassador Chen’s diplomatic team.

The sheep and goat project was launched back in December 2015 and is financed by the Government of the Republic of China, Taiwan as part of that country’s agriculture cooperation with Belize. The main objective of the project is to increase the quality of the sheep and goat meat on the local market, through the introduction of new genetics selected based on their high quality meat. Three (3) improved breeds of sheep, namely the Barbados Black Belly, Dorper and Katahdin, as well as the Boer breed of goat, were introduced into Belize and are being promoted by the project.

Apart from financing the project, the ROC has assisted the project by importing the improved breeds, constructing a state of the art barn, developing improved pastures and protein bank, and holding training sessions for farmers and technicians.

Melanio Pech, a local livestock expert employed by the project, and his technical team, provided the tour to Minister Mai and Ambassador Chen.

Farmers from across the country are able to purchase the improved breeds of sheep and goat from the facility in Central Farm.
