Moses “Shyne” Barrow commends crime-fighting strategy

Posted: Sunday, February 7, 2021. 4:03 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Area representative for Mesopotamia, Moses “Shyne” Barrow, has commended the efforts of Minister of Home Affairs, Kareem Musa, for a “measured” presentation of the plans for a national crime fighting strategy to be rolled out in two weeks’ time.

The talk of body cams, innovative intelligence-led policing, and seeing the human side of the crime epidemic sounds impressive, but Barrow said he would have liked to hear more about the other side of the coin: increasing the conviction rate for murder and other major crimes.

Depending on who you ask, the rate of conviction for murder has fluctuated between three and seven percent over the years due to the number of ‘nolle prosequi’ motions and outright acquittals in the courts.

In an exclusive interview with Breaking Belize News (BBN) Barrow said it was about making the criminals accountable, as when someone is not punished for murder, they may find it easy to get away with it again.
