By BBN Staff: The Caribbean Women in Leadership (CIWiL) Belize National Chapter issued a statement extending congratulations to new chapter chair, Dr. Sharmayne Saunders.

Dr. Saunders fills the seat left vacant by the newly appointed Speaker of the National Assembly, Valerie Woods.

CIWiL thanked Woods for her contribution to the organization.

Dr. Saunders will serve on the Executive Committee to support the continued work of the Chapter in advancing women’s transformational leadership.

In accepting the appointment, Dr. Saunders expressed gratitude to the membership for entrusting her with the leadership of the Chapter.

“I view this role as the rudder of this National Chapter ship…I opted to use the word rudder because whilst it is the smallest apparatus placed at the rear of the ship, it is a moving force that guides and leads…it provides balance,” she said.

CIWiL noted that Dr. Saunders brings a wealth of experience and a 25-year career in teaching, administration, and research. She currently holds the post of Head at the University of the West Indies, Open Campus, Belize.

Her public service was recognized in 2019 with an award for commitment and service to national development and in the education sector in Belize. Dr. Saunders has served and continues to serve on several boards of national and private sector entities and commissions as well as on regional and international editorial boards.

She serves as a member editor for the Journal of Administrative Sciences and Policy Studies and has authored numerous publications.

“The Chapter welcomes Dr. Saunders to the Executive Committee. The members remain keen to contribute to the advancement of gender equality and women’s full and equal participation at all levels of leadership,” the organization said.
