El Salvador’s opposition backs off on plan to oust President Bukele

Posted: Thursday, February 11, 2021. 9:17 am CST.

By BBN Staff: On Tuesday, Opposition parties in El Salvador indicated their plan to begin a process that could oust President Nayib Bukele 2 weeks before elections, the Associated Press reports.

But today, the Opposition parties have reversed their decision and said that they are not really thinking about invoking the constitutional provision.

An official from the Legislative assembly had indicated that the move seemed only as propaganda.

An official from the Arena party had said on Tuesday that Bukele was mentally unfit to continue being President.

However, another official from the same party later said that the removal of the president is not planned. He also called for stability.

President Bukele, however, enjoys popular support in his country and his ideas are expected to dominate local elections this month.

After the officials reversed their decision, Bukele said that they did so after noticing the popular indignation.
