CARICOM speaks to Haiti state of affairs

Posted: Friday, February 12, 2021. 9:22 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Republic of Haiti is undergoing upheaval with protests against President Jovenel Moise resulting in nearly two dozen arrests.

Moise has been ruling almost alone and intends to serve out his full term which he says ends in 2022; opponents say it ended this week.

The Caribbean Community of which Haiti is a member has expressed its deep concern and says it “urges all stakeholders to be guided by the Constitution, respect for the rule of law and the electoral process and in that regard is heartened by the fact that an electoral timetable has been set.”

Deploring alleged armed gang activity against citizens, CARICOM said it “encourages all parties to engage in meaningful dialogue in the interest of peace and stability and strongly urges that action be taken to foster a safe environment, a return to normal life and the building of sustainable democratic institutions.”
