Man busted with weed on drug trafficking charge pleads guilty to lesser offense of possession

By BBN Staff: Prosecutors accepted a plea for possession simplitica from Ansel Ciego, 27, in the Belize City Magistrates Court yesterday, despite him being caught with drugs amounting to almost nine times the threshold for drug trafficking

Ciego pleaded not guilty to a charge of drug trafficking with respect to 530 grams (1.1 pounds) of marijuana, found at his home during a police search on Thursday, as possession simplitica carries a lighter sentence.

Due to the lesser charge, he was fined $1,000 plus $5 cost of court which he must pay by May 31, 2021.

Notably, the threshold for drug trafficking is 60 grams.
