By Aaron Humes: As the sugar season reaches critical mass, Naim Cal, manager of the Sugar Cane Production Committee, was terminated this week, about a month after being hired to replace his predecessor.
According to chairman of the Sugar Industry Control Board (SICB), Marcos Osorio, Cal claimed he was “too busy” to see him at the SICB office, so he went out to the ticket booth and informed Cal of his termination. Osorio told Channel 5 News that Cal surrendered his equipment and police were not called in as had been rumored.
But he refused to discuss the reason for the termination, insisting it was “an internal matter.” All he would say that was he personally made the decision.
Osorio added that in his view, “I think there have always been issues. It is a critical post, yes, indeed but it is critical that we need a very strong-minded person that can operate on how own and make critical decisions, not allowing to be manipulated and when these things happen of manipulation or control by one or two quarters there needs to be a decision.”
But he denied any political involvement or interference; while the Minister may recommend an appointment, it is up to the job holder to perform.
