By BBN Staff: Heading into the March 3 municipal elections, current Belize City Mayor, and returning Mayoral Candidate for the People’s United Party (PUP) Bernard Wagner, says that one of the greatest successes of his council is having not fired any Belize City Council employee during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Wagner, speaking on the occasion of nomination day, said that keeping all council employees on staff was a notable endeavor because his council did not receive any support from the previous central government and had to deal with an almost 60 percent drop in revenue due to the pandemic.
“If you will sit here and tell me that that is not a measure of success then you go and talk to the Belize tourism employees that were terminated at the beginning of COVID in March 2020…and you speak to our sanitation workers and our maintenance workers and ask them how they feel about this council keeping them on and not terminating one single person…” Wagner said.
Wagner went on to say that his council does not measure success by the number of streets that have been concreted but rather by the positive impact that the council has had on the lives of Belize City residents. He also said that he looks forward to returning as mayor under a PUP central government, with the hope that the council will receive some support.
