Belize City Mayor says CitCo won’t rush Christian Workers Union agreement before municipal elections

By BBN Staff: The Belize City Council has asked the Christian Workers Union (CWU) to hold off on signing a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) until after the upcoming Municipal Elections; a decision that Mayor Bernard Wagner says was made on a matter of principle.

“We stick by that principle that we will not sign any contracts, any agreements, make no proposals, to tie and bind the hands of a future council or a future Mayor,” Wagner said.

He went on to say that he is prepared to accept any negative press that comes with sticking to his stance, but notes that making decisions beyond the life of an administration is a stance that has caused trouble for Belize in the past.

“That is why we are in trouble at a central government level,” Wagner continued, “because politicians at the 11th hour sign agreements that bind the hands of future governments, that bind the hands of future municipalities and future Mayors.”

He said that, if re-elected, he will stand behind his letter that the council wrote to the CWU, to have the agreement signed by March 31.

The council and union have been negotiating the revised CBA since 2019.
