Mayor Wagner says no conflict of interest in his company offering discounts on credit to CitCo employees

By BBN Staff: Last week it was revealed that JBW Finance Company Limited, a company owned by Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner, is offering a 14 percent discount on loans to Belize City Council (CItCo) staff, an offering that Wagner says has nothing to do with him.

While the CitCo staff received word of the offering via an internal memo at the council, Wagner said today that it still does not amount to a conflict of interest on his part.

“How could it be a conflict of Interest?” Wagner asked reporters when questioned about the implications of his company offering the concessionary rates to employees of his City Council.

“That organization has a manager. The relationship that the manager has is not anything on the mayor,” Wagner said. “It’s a relationship with the council and the manager, I’ll leave it at that.”

Notably the offer comes just under a month to go before Wagner and a new team of councilors will offer themselves up to form the next city council at the March Municipal Elections.
