Police intervene in dispute between officers in Sittee River

Posted: Monday, February 15, 2021. 10:06 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Police Department has initiated an investigation into a confrontation between officers based in Sittee River, Stann Creek District, which took place approximately a month ago.

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Joseph Myvette, told reporters today that he is not aware of any conclusions in relation to the case, but both officers have been “dealt with.”

The resident officer at Sittee River’s police station, according to our reports, said he was returning with his common-law wife, also a cop, from Hopkins where he had picked her up from extra patrol. The officer met his colleague, who lives above the village health center next to the station, who was shouting and railing and, he judged, under the influence of alcohol.

The shirtless officer, who Myvette confirmed today works as a plain-clothes detective, was carrying his service weapon. He turned it on the resident officer, threatening and insulting him. The resident officer instructed his wife, who is pregnant, to run to the station for safety and went for his service weapon himself, only to hear a single gunshot from his fellow officer’s direction.

The report continues that the officer’s partner got to safety and called for assistance, while the officer defended himself and his family from the shirtless officer who kept his weapon trained on the station. The resident officer fired once in the air and ordered his fellow officer to put the weapon down. Eventually, the village chairman and other officers arrived and subdued the shirtless officer.
