By Aaron Humes: This evening, Chief Elections Officer Josephine Tamai confirmed with us that some 160 candidates were nominated nationwide for the 67 municipal seats up for grabs on March 3.
By law, an election must be held if there are more persons nominated than there are seats to be filled.
Both major parties, the People’s United Party (PUP) and United Democratic Party (UDP) nominated all 67 of their candidates. In Belize City, three candidates will run for the Belize Progressive Party (BPP) as well as one independent candidate. The Progressives will also run a full slate in Punta Gorda Town, home of party deputy leader Wil Maheia.
Nancy Marin’s Belize People’s Front will run three candidates in Dangriga Town, while the United Upliftment Party (UUP) will run a single one. A full slate of seven independent candidates will contest elections in San Ignacio and Santa Elena Towns, while independents are also on the ballot in Belmopan, Dangriga, Punta Gorda and Orange Walk Town.
The People’s United Party hold the councils in Belize City, Corozal, Orange Walk and one councilor, now Senator Erica Jang, in Dangriga; the United Democratic Party hold the remaining members in San Pedro, Belmopan, the Twin Towns, Benque Viejo, Dangriga and Punta Gorda.
