Cabinet Brief: Four-phase COVID-19 vaccine rollout begins at end of March

Posted: Thursday, February 18, 2021. 9:13 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Encouraged by the overall decline of COVID-19 cases – falling from an average of 182 positive cases per day to a daily average of 22, bringing the daily positivity rate from 20 percent in November and December to the current average daily positivity rate of 4.5 percent, the Ministry of Health and Wellness presented its vaccine rollout plan to Cabinet for approval.

The plan will vaccinate more than half of Belize’s estimated population, more than 200 thousand, in 120 days (4 months), starting with healthcare workers, the elderly, vulnerable citizens with mental and physical disabilities, teachers and other frontline persons

The plan which should start by the end of March, was presented to and approved by Cabinet.

Belize is set to receive vaccines from a variety of sources: 100,800 through the COVAX facility; 80-thousand plus through the African partnership with CARICOM; 20,000 Sputnik V vaccines from Russia through Panama; 1,000 from Barbados via India; and potential doses from India and Mexico.
