By Aaron Humes: Barring a surprise victory for Ralston Frazer, Belmopanese are likely to elect their first woman to be Mayor of the New Capital.
Mayor Khalid Belisle, standing down to become a Senator, will be replaced either by deputy Jacklyn Burns of the United Democratic Party, or by retired educator Sheran “Sharon” Palacio of the People’s United Party.
Their slates are as follows: United Democratic Party: Jacklyn Burns, Mayor; Cristina Chacon, Paul Chun, D’Andre Martinez, Victor Orellana, Louise Willis and Leslie Zelaya, councillors.
People’s United Party: Sheran “Sharon” Palacio, Mayor; Hope Amadi, Nikki Augustine, Sanie Cal, Guadalupe Chicas, Pauline Soberanis Tillett and Daren Swasey, councillors.
While the City is one large polling area, Number 86, there will be four polling stations – United Evergreen School (North); Garden City Primary School (Central); St. Michael Roman Catholic School (West); and Belmopan Comprehensive School (East), with “Compre” also acting as counting station.
