Meet the (new and improved) Jaguars

Posted: Friday, February 19, 2021. 2:12 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The players named to the National A Selection for the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers in March are a mix of old and new.

Players had been training individually since October and the final 23 will have passed their fitness tests and conducted training for two weeks.

By agreement with the Ministry of Sports (also Youth and E-Governance), the group will train in a strict bubble with COVID-19 testing before and during their appearance, with the players being charged to remain in place throughout.

While as previously reported the first ‘home’ game of the qualifiers will be played in the Dominican Republic, it is hoped that things will have calmed down enough by June 8, when the second game will be played against Saint Lucia.

Competing forwards are Deon McCaulay (Ginga Atlanta, USA); Michael Salazar (Houston Dynamo, USA); Randy Padilla (Club Deportivo Mictlan, Guatemala); Krisean Lopez (Verdes FC) and Desmond Wade (Belize Defence Force FC).

Woodrow West is firmly established as first-choice goalkeeper; he plays for Verdes FC. Backing him up are Ethan Wagner of Police United and Isaac Castillo of Capital United FC, meaning the long career of Shane Moody-Orio, most recently of Belmopan Bandits, appears to be at an end.

The defense line is mostly new; old stalwarts include Ian Gaynair (Belmopan Bandits), Norman Anderson (Verdes FC), and Everal Trapp (Verdes FC). The others to be considered are: Jose Urbina (Altitude FC); Asrel Sutherland (San Pedro Pirates FC); Allan Barillas (Altitude FC); Michael Atkinson (North Leigh FC, England); Deshawon Nembhard (Charleston Battery FC, USA); Sean Caliz (Wagiya SC); Colin Westby (Verdes FC); Blake Tejada (Verdes FC); and Donel Arzu (Wagiya SC).

The midfield has been strengthened by several imports of Belizean descent: Johny El Zein (Aris Limassol FC, Dubai); Carlos Bernardez (Vida, Honduras); and Angelo Cappello (Sheffield United, England). They join Tony Rocha (New York City FC, USA); Nana Mensah (Michigan Stars, USA); Izon Gill (Verdes FC); Justin Trapp (Freedom Fighters); Andres Makin Jr (Bandits Sports); Orlando Velasquez Midfielder (Caesar Ridge FC); Ean Lewis (Belize Defence Force FC); Darrel Myvett (Verdes FC); Jordy Polanco (Verdes FC); Luis Torres (Altitude FC); and Jarret Davis (Verdes FC).

Team head coach is Dale Pelayo, Sr., assisted by Marvin Ottley. Team manager is Raynard Garbutt; coaching the goalkeepers is Stanley Reneau; physical trainer is Dennis Serano and therapist is Ben Aba; the team doctor is Carlos Crespo and equipment manager, Herbert Trapp, Jr.
