Ministry of Health and Wellness: Dr. Manzanero agreed to demotion

By BBN Staff: This week, it was widely publicized that Dr. Marvin Manzanero, has lost his job as the Director of Health Services (DHS); however, the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) said yesterday that he knew the change was coming and already agreed to it.

Chief Executive Officer in the MOHW Deysi Mendez, gave an interview to CTV3, saying that Manzanero had agreed to return to the HIV Programme and that the only issue that remained to be sorted out was whether or not he would be required to report to Belize City or would remain in Belmopan.

Meanwhile, the Association of Public Service Senior Managers (APSSM) has noted that Manzanero’s return to the HIV Program is essentially a demotion; one that comes without due process and is unjustified. The APSSM says that Manzanero has reached out to them regarding the transition, as no one had told him anything about it. APSSM President Sharon Fraiser also made the point this week that having an Acting DHS, while there is a substantive DHS, goes against public service procedures especially for auditing purposes, which is another issue that needs to be addressed.

Fraiser said that the Association is preparing a list of options on how to proceed. Manzanero himself, thus far, has not replied to BBN’s request for comment.

Manzanero reported to work on Monday, to find that his job, office, vehicle, and desk, were no longer his.
