Police and Coast Guard working together to combat piracy activities

Posted: Saturday, February 20, 2021. 2:27 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Following the shooting incident last night at Private Heaven, Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams issued a statement saying that the police and coast guard are working together to combat piracy activities.

“Over the past few weeks, we are seeing an increase in sea piracy activities in the waters of Southern Belize. Those engaged in these criminal activities have relieved many of our genuinely hard-working fishermen and businessmen of their belongings, particularly boats, engines, and marine products,” Williams said.

Williams says that the authorities will go after the suspects.

Williams added that the authorities have launched several operations in the Southern waters targeting pirates.

“Earlier this week we launched several operations in the southern waters targeting those pirates. Our operations lead to the detention of several of those we suspected to be involved. They were charged by Fisheries Department for many fisheries violations. As the persons are also members of local gangs from Dangriga, they were also charged with being the member of a gang by the police. They appeared in court yesterday and were all remanded to prison,” Williams asserted.

The commissioner said that members of the community are also supporting with their vessels and other needed resources to be able to search for and capture those responsible.

The Compol urged the public to share any information they may have to lead to the apprehension of those criminals.
