Agriculture Minister says ‘No imported Mexican potatoes’ seen in Orange Walk market

Posted: Tuesday, February 23, 2021. 1:23 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Today, Minister of Agriculture, Jose Mai visited market vendors in Orange Walk.

After his tour, Mai said that he was happy to see that there were no Mexican potatoes at the market.

“Any white potatoes in any market across the country may have been imported illegally and will be treated as such,” Mai explained.

Mai says that the main potato harvest is underway and the Ministry of Agriculture will ensure to safeguard the farmers’ interest.

Mai is encouraging all Belizeans to buy local and ‘buy Belize’.

The situation with potato farmers had been ongoing under the previous administration, with importation permits being issued with no regard for the local harvest of potatoes particularly in farmers from Cayo, Mai said.
