Ex-Telemedia chair Net Vasquez challenges some credit card charges in investigation of his spending

By Aaron Humes: The matter of former Belize Telemedia Limited board chairman, Nestor Vasquez, came up during the company’s annual general meeting held over the weekend.

Vasquez stepped down from his post last September, entering retirement after a scandal in which he was accused of tacking on nearly a million dollars in personal expenses to the company’s corporate credit card.

While Vasquez has since paid back some of the money, he reportedly retained the services of attorney Estevan Perrera to challenge several of the credit card charges over a four-year period dating back to 2016.  

Successor Mark Lizarraga says the matter could be headed to the courts, but one way or another, Vasquez will pay: “It is now a matter, as I understand it, with the attorneys and before the courts.  It will be going before the courts or whatever, but that process is taking its course.  B.T.L. certainly intends to, first of all, collect fully on that outstanding debt.  The way we look at it, it’s a debt and it needs to be collected and certainly, we will be looking at the matter to see if there were any criminal wrongdoings.”
