Public Service Union commends Government on good governance efforts

Posted: Wednesday, February 24, 2021. 1:25 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The Public Service Union of Belize (PSU) issued a statement today expressing its appreciation to the Government of Belize (GOB) for its recent efforts to strengthen and build on its good governance agenda.

The PSU commends the move by GOB to increase the membership on the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) to include the social partners.

In addition, the PSU expressed its appreciation for the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for Good Governance Curriculum between Love Foundation and the Ministry of Public Service, Constitutional and Political Reform (MPSCPR).

“With reference to the former, as a Member of the National Trade Union Congress of Belize, the PSU welcomes the expanded PAC and rallies for the inclusion of the Unions Senator to the PAC so that the PSU can actively support the Unions Senator in the performance of her role on the PAC. It is our hope that the Government will also move to ensure that more highly trained and qualified human resources are added to the staff in the Accountant General and Auditor General Departments to ensure that more timely and comprehensive reports can be prepared and tabled in parliament,” the union noted.

The PSU says that the spotlight must be turned and shone on these important offices, which deal with treasury integrity, accountability, compliance, and fiscal discipline.

“We must all, therefore, pay more attention to the performance and quality of work coming out of both the Accountant General and Auditor General Departments. With reference to the MPSCPR signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for Good Governance Curriculum with the Love Foundation, the PSU hails this as a step in the right direction in changing the culture of corruption that currently exists within the Public Service,” the union added.

The PSU says that in 2019, the PSU undertook a similar signing with the Love Foundation but they received no support from the former MPS CEO and former Government Administration.

The PSU also applauded the Love Foundation for its determination to ensure training is offered to public officers.

The PSU noted that it looks forward to fully supporting and participating in the Good Governance curriculum.
