By Aaron Humes: By all accounts, Belize does not currently have a Director of Health Services – at least not a functioning one.
The incumbent, Dr. Marvin Manzanero, is home on administrative leave, accused of an omission that some say could have saved lives; his acting replacement, Dr. Melissa Diaz-Musa, is reportedly back at her former post in Belize City.
The Association of Public Service Senior Managers (APSSM) has been loudly leading the call for Dr. Manzanero’s reinstatement and this afternoon reiterated this in a statement.
The APSSM officially registered its “disappointment and condemnation” of the Ministry of Health’s “disregard of due process” in respect of Dr. Manzanero, whom they said has been duly appointed since 2015 after first joining Government service in 2006 as Coordinator for HIV. And he remains in that post, they reiterate, despite the attacks on him.
The Association goes on to dismiss claims of misconduct by Dr. Manzanero, saying these very serious suggestions have been made without a reference to any rulebook or guide.
“This only demonstrates the evils of political interference into the work public servants, when there is a clear constitutional line on what governs the office of the DHS,” the Association warned.
It calls on the Government to correct the error quickly.
