By BBN Staff: The COVID-19 pandemic continues to destroy social calendars around the world, with its latest victim in Belize being the much-anticipated 2021 La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge.
The Belikin La Ruta Maya Committee announced yesterday that, due to growing health and concerns around COVID-19 and the Ministry of Health & Wellness protocols in place, the race itself would be canceled. The committee noted however that the race will be replaced by a combination of locally hosted radio and TV events, videos, and live-streamed content on Love FM.
“We know that this comes as an enormous disappointment, not only to the paddlers, but also to the many fans, sponsors, and communities along the Belize River Valley,” the committee said. “This is the first time in 24 years that this March event will not take place; however, the show must go on!”
The committee thanked all those that have contributed to the development of the race since it launched in 1998 and promised that the 25th La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge would be a “reimagined” event that will attract more paddlers, fans, and sponsors.
The committee also said, “Though it is true that the race will no longer take place in the way that we intended for 2021, we continue to strive toward our purpose – fostering environmental awareness, culture, and history of the Belize Old River and tourism development.”
