COMMISSION OF INQUIRY: Ex- Lands Minister surprised by volume of land transfers in connection with vehicle purchase

By Aaron Humes: Former Minister of Natural Resources Hugo Patt was the first witness before the Commission of Inquiry this morning in Belize City.

Despite Patt’s contention that every Belizean is entitled to a piece of the Jewel, he manifestly could not recall the transfers of various pieces of land to one Zhou Rong Li, also known as Kevin, some through other persons, between July and November of 2020.

Patt said in his defense that the Ministry processes large amounts of transactions and he relies on the recommendations of those below him.

He denied personally knowing Li.

As for the practically new Toyota Tacoma, he was assigned after becoming Deputy Prime Minister a year ago, he admitted to using an intermediary, Juvencio Herrera, to buy the vehicle on his behalf, intending to pay him back later as at the time they agreed to the deal he had personal money problems.  But he claimed not to know who ultimately bought the vehicle.
