By BBN Staff: Minister of Tourism and Diaspora Relations Anthony Malher announced this weekend that vaccination of tourism frontline workers is a key part of the recovery strategy for Belize’s tourism sector.

Malher, speaking at a media mixer held at the Best Western Belize Biltmore Plaza on Saturday, said that plans are underway to vaccinate some 8,000 frontline tourism workers as the country prepares itself for global travel to resume.

“Which means that we can signal to the world that we are a safe destination as we move and start to roll out vaccinations,” Malher said.

He noted that the vaccination of tourism workers is one of several initiatives underway in a grand effort to revive the industry, which has been ravaged by the pandemic.

Prime Minister John Briceño, speaking at the same event, committed to the vaccination of the tourism workers but noted that the country’s immediate priority is the vaccination of healthcare workers and teachers. Briceño said that Belize is expected to get its first batch of COVID-19 vaccines through the United Nations COVAX initiative in March and those shots will be issued out to priority groups.
