By Aaron Humes: As of this afternoon, the number of Belizeans vaccinated against COVID-19 in-country has risen from zero to three.
Nurse Casilda Bowman, Head of the COVID-19 Unit at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital; Dr Marcelo Coyi, Chair of the National Immunization Technical Advisory Group (NITAG), and Dr Eric Bradley, Head of Internal Medicine at Karl Heusner Memorial hospital and lead physician at the COVID-19 unit, volunteered to take the needle to demonstrate how quick and safe the vaccine is.
They are part of the cadre of health care workers who are first in line for vaccinations as elsewhere.
All three were vaccinated publicly this afternoon at House of Culture, Belize City, facing television cameras and closely watched by Minister of Health and Wellness Michel Chebat and Prime Minister John Briceno.
After a series of questions to ensure they were not presently sick or allergic and had not gotten the vaccine before, they were jabbed and show no obvious signs of distress after 15 minutes.
The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine with which they were inoculated carries minor side effects including a headache but has reported few adverse reactions.
