Prime Minister addresses municipal elections, Budget preparations, and COVID-19 vaccine rollout

By Aaron Humes: Prime Minister John Briceño has continued a tradition he started in Opposition with a weekly message to the nation, delivered by social media.

This week, he addressed three critical issues: municipal elections on Wednesday, Budget preparations, and COVID-19 vaccine rollout.

On the matter of the election, Briceño asked Belizeans to support his People’s United Party (PUP) teams: “Just a few weeks ago, you expressed with a “BLU tsunami” voice a progressive change in direction. I humbly ask that you support the competent PUP teams across Belize so that we can work together at the national and municipal levels to implement our #planBelize.”

As he prepares to present his first Budget, the Prime Minister spoke of a “new dawn of cooperation,” and added that the laws are being changed to account for the way the people’s money is spent. “The tough choices we make today will make all the difference in how we bounce back and recover,” he concluded.

Today, Monday, the Prime Minister and Minister of Health and Wellness Michel Chebat will in Belize City unveil the national COVID-19 vaccine rollout and plan. In a preview, the Prime Minister said healthcare workers, persons over 65 years of age; those with diverse abilities, and teachers will be first in line for vaccination. Next up are other “front-line” workers: Police, Customs, Immigration, tourism, transportation, and all other public officers. “Ordinary” Belizeans between 18 and 59 who are not in any of the above categories are the largest group – some 145,976 Belizeans.

“The vaccine is our strongest weapon to fight for the opening of our economy of the world: opening our schools, bring back tourism, and to bring back jobs as we rise from the devastation of the UDP and COVID-19. We must be in solidarity with each other,” the P.M. said.

Later, he urged Belizeans to take the vaccine when it is made available to them. “We must see this vaccine rollout not just for our own protection, but the protection of the nation. I urge you to get the vaccine when it is your turn; I promise you, it is safe to do so,” Briceño added, also reiterating the edicts of handwashing, mask-wearing, and social distancing.
