By BBN Staff: The World Health Organization (WHO) is reporting that global COVID-19 infections soared up for the first time in 7 weeks, according to Yahoo News reports.
A WHO official warned that the virus can rebound if the public allows it.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the rise in cases was “disappointing but not surprising” and urged countries not to relax measures to fight the disease.
In addition, WHO warned countries to not rely solely on vaccination programs and to keep measures in place to prevent the spread of the virus.
WHO officials also called for equitable vaccine distribution.
An emergency expert at WHO said that the global fight against the coronavirus was in a better state now than it was 10 weeks ago before the roll-outs of vaccines had begun.
