By Aaron Humes: The People’s United Party (PUP) is claiming victory in multiple municipalities, according to various media reports.
In Belize City, Bernard Wagner’s team has assumed commanding leads of between 3 and 6.5 to 1 in various constituencies, although the United Democratic Party (UDP) is said to be holding on to its strongholds in Collet, Queen’s Square and Mesopotamia.
The blue has won long-time stronghold Orange Walk Town and also leads in Corozal Town.
In San Pedro Town, the blue has declared victory, but the UDP have hope of one or two councilors according to reports from the island. Belmopan has gone back to the blue, according to area representative Oscar Mira, after assuming commanding leads in the four precincts of the New Capital.
After 21 years, Benque Viejo del Carmen has gone from red to blue with reports there saying the PUP won 8 of 12 boxes.
San Ignacio/Santa Elena appears to be a dogfight, with narrow blue margins in the north of town being reported.
Dangriga is said to have gone blue with the PUP leading all boxes there.
Punta Gorda has had one box counted with the blue in the lead, but the Belize Progressive Party (BPP), seeking to land their first councilors there, are running the UDP close. There are seven more boxes in the southernmost town to be counted.
National turnout was unofficially 57.28 percent, with Corozal in the lead at 72.45 percent, Orange Walk at 61.6 percent, Belize City at 46.66 percent, San Pedro Town at 69.49 percent, Belmopan at 54.83 percent; Benque at 62 percent; San Ignacio at 55.79 percent; Dangriga at 54.41 percent and Punta Gorda at 61.36 percent.
More detailed results to come.
