Corozal Bay by-election official results: Elvia Vega Samos victory confirmed

By Aaron Humes: The official results of the Corozal Bay by-election have been announced.

Elvia Vega Samos of the People’s United Party (PUP) won 2,659 of 4,132 votes, or 64.3 percent, to 1,428 for Hilberto Campos of the United Democratic Party (UDP), for 34.5 percent.

There were 4,087 clean votes and 45 rejected votes. Voter turnout was 72.34 percent.

As previously reported, Vega is the first woman elected to the House of Representatives from the Corozal District, the first to hold a seat for the incumbent in a by-election in Belizean history, and responsible for halting the UDP’s by-election winning streak which currently stands at three. She becomes the second PUP candidate, joining Jorge Espat, to win a by-election for the party.

Most importantly for Vega Samos, she succeeds her late brother David, who died the day he was to be sworn in as area representative for Corozal Bay, on December 11, 2021.
