Municipal Election 2021: Orange Walk Town returns a full PUP slate with a 3:1 margin

By Aaron Humes: The People’s United Party, as expected, held on to the Prime Minister and party leader John Briceno’s stronghold of Orange Walk Town at the municipal level.

Ladrick Sheppard won 4,472 votes to 1,172 for Orlando “Chicle” Castillo, the United Democratic Party (UDP) candidate in the mayoral race.

Conceding, Castillo said the results were a clear indication to him to the party was in trouble in the Sugar City, which it hadn’t won since 2003 as Briceno has tightened his grip.

As for him personally, Castillo says he will get back on the ground working to be prepared for the next electoral cycle.

The councillor candidates for the PUP performed as follows: Joesie Cantun, 4,520; Cadir Escalante, 4,503; Doreth Pascascio, 4,466; Joanna Rodriguez, 4,439; Fernando Sanchez, 4,524; and Allen Yu, 4,449.

For the UDPs, the top vote getter was Shamika Bull with 1,443; next was Estelita Carlos with 1,426; Andi Yam, 1,359; Rene Escalante, 1,349; Melvin Adolphus, 1,381; and Henry Gomez, 1,318.
