By Aaron Humes: The respective Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Belize and Guatemala met in person for the first time at the shared and disputed border this morning.
According to outgoing Ambassador of Belize to Guatemala Alexis Rosado, Eamon Courtenay and Pedro Brolo Villa have agreed to reopen the Belize-Guatemala Joint Commission to guide relations between the countries, which are now before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Guatemala’s claim to part or all of Belizean territory.
However, there is much to collaborate on. The countries exchanged updates on efforts at improving bilateral relations and committed to enhancement of trade by implementing the Partial Scope Trade Agreement and reviving the administrative institutions of the PSA to ensure effectiveness and efficiency.
Guatemala has also agreed with Belize to abide by the 2005 Agreement on a Framework for Negotiations And Confidence Building Measures.
The meeting was hosted at the Adjacency Zone office of the Organization of American States (OAS).
