By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The March 3rd Municipal elections countrywide was swept away by the ruling People’s United Party (PUP), with the exception of 1 Mayor (male) and 1 Councillor (female) in the Twin Towns.
Overall, twenty-four women were elected including Corozal Bay Area Representative, Elvia Vega Samos, and Belmopan Mayor Sheran Palacio, both women breaking barriers in their respective communities.
Of the 23 women elected, only Bernadette Fernandez from the UDP was elected in San Ignacio and Santa Elena.
The other victorious women councilors are:
Corozal: Marleni Tapia
Orange Walk: Joesie Cantun, Doreth Pascacio and Joanna Rodriguez
Belize City: Kaya Cattouse, Stephanie Hamilton, Natasha Pipersburgh, Deanne Requena
San Pedro: Dianeli Aranda, Marina Kay, Adaly Ayuso, Johnnia Duarte
Belmopan: Nikki Augustine, Guadalupe Chicas, Pauline Tillett
Benque Viejo: Terry Alvarado, Vania Garcia, Avelin Martinez
San Ignacio/ Santa Elena: Bernadette Fernandez, Shirlene Neal
Dangriga: Martha Robinson
Punta Gorda: Mary Palacio
