United Nations agency reports COVID-19 crisis in Latin America made worse by poverty and inequality

Posted: Thursday, March 4, 2021. 1:14 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: A United Nations agency reported that Latin America and the Caribbean facing the COVID-19 crisis will only see worse conditions plagued by poverty and inequality, Yahoo News reports.

The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) noted that social unrest was on the rise across the region.

“The effects of the coronavirus pandemic have spread to all areas of human life, altering the way we interact, paralyzing economies and generating profound changes in societies,” the report said.

Those issues are also worsened by the lack of effective healthcare coverage.

In addition, poverty is a major issue and the closing of classes will constitute a “generational catastrophe” that will only deepen inequality.
