World Obesity Day is today

By BBN Staff: Today marks the sixth annual observation of World Obesity Day, an initiative coined by the World Obesity Federation to stimulate and support practical solutions on a broader, global basis to help people achieve and maintain a healthy weight, and to reverse the obesity crisis.

The event is being observed under the 2021 theme ‘Everybody, needs everybody’ – this is to create awareness about the increasing health problem it is for developing countries.

Director of Health services for the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) Dr. Marvin Manzanero, in his message to Belize on this occasion, explained that obesity is caused by a combination of genetic, environmental, and behavioral factors, such as physical inactivity and unhealthy diets.

“This environment is usually driven by factors outside of the individual’s control coupled with persons facing stigma and discrimination due to their weight which can lead to poor emotional well-being, and low self-esteem,” Manzanero said. “While there is no single intervention that can address obesity effectively, it does require a collective effort, especially when dealing with pediatric and adolescent populations. In tackling obesity, we do need everybody.”

Data from the MOHW showed that the three major causes of death ib Belize for the year 2019 were diseases of the heart, cancers, and diabetes, respectively; all of which have scientifically proven links to obesity in terms of risk, occurrence, and morbidity of these conditions.
