By Ruben Morales Iglesias, Belize City: National Team coach Dale Pelayo is dropping and adding players in an effort of putting together the best possible team to represent Belize in the upcoming FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 qualifiers at the end of the month.

Today, the Football Federation of Belize (FFB) announced that three players had left the team Jarret Davis, Justin Trapp, and Orlando Velasquez, and thanked them “for their time and efforts during their time in the bubble. Unfortunately, their journey came to an end today.”

At the same time, the FFB said that it was welcoming three players, namely Nahjib Guerra, Nana-Yaw Gydeu Amankwah-Mensah (Nana Mensah), and Michael Atkinson.

Mensah arrived in the country today from the United States and Michael Atkinson will fly in from the United Kingdom tomorrow, Saturday, March 6, 2021. Guerra lives in Belize.

All three have played for the Belize National Men’s Football Team (BNMFT) before. Guerra, 26, a midfielder/striker, who joined the Belize Jaguars in 2015, has six National Team appearances under his belt. Additionally, he played the last few PLB seasons with Verdes, the Belmopan Bandits, and a Peten team in Guatemala.

Mensah, 32, is a defensive midfielder who plays for the Michigan Stars in the USL in the United States. Apart from other US teams, he has also played for four different clubs in Turkey. He made his international debut for Belize in 2015 and has 13 international caps.

For his part, Atkinson, 26, a defender/midfielder who is a Royal Airforce pilot, plays with the UK Armed Forces team. He joined the BNMFT in 2018 and is looking to play his ninth and tenth games with the BNMFT.

Belize is in Group E in CONCACAF qualifiers along with Haiti, Nicaragua, Saint Lucia, and Turks and Caicos Islands and will be playing against Haiti at Port au Prince on Thursday, March 25, 2021, and against Turks and Caicos at Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, on Tuesday, March 30, 2021.
