Brazil’s President tells his people to “stop whining” as COVID-19 deaths hit record highs

Posted: Friday, March 5, 2021. 7:19 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: COVID-19-related deaths in Brazil have exceeded 260,000, the second-highest death toll in the world, outnumbered only by the United States. However, despite losing more than 2,000 people a day, Brazilian President Jair Bolosonaro told his people this week that they need to move on.

“Enough fussing and whining. How much longer will the crying go on?” Bolsonaro said. “How much longer will you stay at home and close everything? No one can stand it anymore. We regret the deaths, again, but we need a solution.”

His statement came during a public address on Thursday in the state of Goiás, where nearly 9,000 people have died. Yahoo News reports that a senior medical official in Brazil has said that deaths in the country are likely to “explode” to 3,000 people a week.

Bolsonaro, who has been criticized globally for his inaction in addressing the pandemic, condemns social distancing, mask-wearing, and other protocols set in place to stop the spread of the virus, even as his country records over 10.7 million cases, the third-highest number of infections in the world.
