Ruben Morales Iglesias, Belize City: The FFB is looking for people who want to be referees and is offering to train them free of cost.
Football is not only about playing. It is about playing fair and with respect for the opponent. The passion with which sports are played makes that objective not easily achieved without someone overseeing the game to ensure that things don’t get too heated and out of hand. That’s where referees come in, to control the ebb and flow of a football match which is played according to the FIFA Laws of the Game.
Even though they can’t always ensure games don’t get too heated and out of hand, and though fans will always question their decisions because we all tend to have a favorite team, it’s with their guidance that football matches generally play well.
To that end, FIFA makes sure that referees are trained and offers national federations like the FFB financial assistance to train their own cadre of referees. It’s in FIFA’s best interests since the referees who officiate their competitions come from those same football federations all over the world.
Here at home, the FFB is once again embarking on a referee training program and is starting a referees recruitment drive. Interested persons should be at least 16 years old, have completed high school, love football, and want to play a role in the sport.
The FFB said in a press release yesterday Friday, March 5, 2021, that people interested in becoming referees may download application forms “directly from our website and can then be taken or sent to the football regional office nearest to you!”
“We provide the training, you provide the time,” the FFB press release said.
