Barcelona new president Joan Laporta promises he will try to make Messi stay

Posted: Monday, March 8, 2021. 11:22 am CST.

By Ruben Morales Iglesias, Belize City: As soon as Joan Laporta was elected FC Barcelona president on Sunday, March 7, 2021, he promised he’ll do everything in his power to get Messi to stay at the club.

“Today marks 20 years since a boy named Leo Messi debuted with Barcelona’s Infantil B [U12-13] team,” the new Barcelona president said after the club’s elections. “Seeing the best player in the world come to vote with his son is an example of what we’ve said.”

“Leo loves Barcelona. The best player in the world loves Barca and I hope that is a sign that he will stay at Barcelona, which is what we all want.”

Joan Laporta said Lionel Messi had sent him a message congratulating him.

Messi, 33, along with other players voted in the election. This was the first time Barcelona’s star player voted, and it is being interpreted as a sign that he wants to stay with the club.

At the end of last year’s prolonged season, Messi made an attempt to leave the club one year before his contract was up but desisted claiming he didn’t want to go to court against the team he loves so much.

Manchester City and Paris St Germain are said to be very much interested in acquiring his services come June when his Barcelona contract expires. Laporta is intent at stopping that from happening.

Laporta previously held FC Barcelona’s presidency from 2003 to 2010 overseeing what is considered to be team must successful era. He acquired the services of such players as Ronaldinho, Samuel Eto’o and Messi himself.

Barça reported that nearly half of its eligible voting members, 51,765 out of 109,531, cast their ballot in Sunday’s vote. The election was originally slated to be held in January but was postponed because of COVID-19 measures in Catalonia, Spain.

Laporta blew away his competition garnering 30,184 votes (54.28%) of the vote (55,611) over Victor Font,16,679 votes (29.99%) and Toni Freixa, 4,769 votes (8.58.1%).

Barcelona is going through a very bad moment in its his history. They haven’t won the European UEFA Champions league since 2015 and have had several ignominious defeats to the likes of Liverpool, Roma and Bayern Munich over the last few years.

In effect right now they have a big battle in the return-leg on Wednesday in Paris against PSG, who beat them with a resounding 4-1 score in Barcelona two weeks ago.

“We’re off to Paris to stage a comeback,” Laporta said yesterday.

Barcelona.com reports that Laporta has had a busy Monday. Laporta first had PCR tests to be able to travel to Paris on Tuesday at the invitation of the president of the Managing Commission Carles Tusquets for Wednesday’s second leg of their last 16 Champions League tie against PSG.

Afterwards, Laporta visited the football first team, greeted coach Ronald Koeman and his staff, and also the Barça players in the dressing room.

Laporta succeeds Josep Maria Bartomeu who resigned as president in October to avoid a no-confidence vote and who was arrested this week by Catalan police who are investigating wrongdoings within the club.

COVID-19 has not been good to sport, and Barcelona in particular, are said to been in severe debt.
