Belizean women- We thrive!

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: “ Here’s to strong women, may we be them, may we know them, may we raise them,”

Belizeans are resilient and our women thrive!

In October 2020, I was participating in a virtual tour of the United States electoral process.

At the time, we discussed Women in Politics and women taking the lead in the decision-making processes.

After a discussion with IGNITE National, I wrote on the fact that more Belizean women were involved in politics but not in political office.

The US-based organization focuses on impacting women and how we see ourselves in leadership positions.

Today, as we celebrate International Women’s Day under the theme “Choose to Challenge”, I reflect on how women have risen up to the challenge in a couple of months.

After the November 11th general elections, the new Briceno Administration named women as leaders and directors in various ministries and departments.

Outstanding women were also named as Speaker of the House, Valerie Woods, and Carolyn Trench Sandiford as Senate President.

For the March 3rd municipal elections, throughout the country, 88 women were nominated for political office.

Twenty-four Belizean women were elected including Mayor Sharon Palacio of Belmopan and Corozal Bay area representative, Elvia Vega Samos.  I am proud of our women breaking barriers and making way for future generations of women.

Undoubtedly, the new administration has provided more opportunities and support for women to become actively involved in politics and political office.

The theme ‘Choose to challenge’ focuses on the importance of recognizing and highlighting our accomplishments, our determination, and our will to forge women empowerment worldwide.

We are celebrating ourselves- the women who choose to challenge and speak out.

The women who continuously challenge the status quo to inspire and accelerate change.

Women all around the globe continue to inspire others to thrive with their strength, passion, and determination.

Like many other Belizeans, I am pleased with the new direction of empowering women with increased participation in elections, public leadership, and decision-making.

Happy International Women’s Day!
