Special Envoy’s International Women’s Day message is one of reflection and hope

Posted: Monday, March 8, 2021. 6:55 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Today, Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children  Rossana Briceño, delivered her first address to the nation on the occasion of International Women’s Day, speaking a message of reflection and of hope.

Briceño noted that women have played an integral role in the country’s development and that Belize has many phenomenal women, to whom the entire nation owes a debt of gratitude for their contribution in shaping the society to where it is today.

“This was formed over the decades by eminent women like Madame Liz, Miss Jane (Jane Usher), Sister Mercy Servantes, Cleopatra White, or Black Cross Nurses, and that great generation of formidable Belize women upon whose shoulders and power examples we stand upon today,” Briceño said.

She stressed that, while Belize has come a long way in enhancing the lives of women, the country still has a long way to go as women are still marginalized, unappreciated, lacking in opportunities in many areas.

Briceño called on all Belizeans to look at this International Women’s Day with hope, as the country prepares to receive much-needed vaccines to help battle COVID-19, and as efforts are being made at every echelon of society to advance the station of Belize’s women, the time is coming where Belize will achieve gender equality, even in the face of a pandemic.
