Teacher’s Union polls membership on proposed 10 percent pay cut

Posted: Monday, March 8, 2021. 2:26 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The Belize National Teacher’s Union (BNTU) is asking its members to share their thoughts on a 10 percent salary cut and increment freeze proposed by the Government of Belize (GOB).

The BNTU has set up an electronic poll for its membership to weigh in on the matter, in preparation for a meeting with GOB on Wednesday, March 10.

Last week, Financial Secretary Joseph Waight wrote to all unions representing public servants, referencing various cost-saving measures being proposed by GOB in an effort to advance the country’s economic position.

The cost-saving saving measures suggest that the salary cut and freeze of annual increments remain in place for three years and are expected to achieve savings of $60 million and $20 million a year, respectively.

GOB maintains that the cost-saving measures are necessary because the previous government administration had left the country’s economy in bad shape and says the situation was further compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic.
