Earl Trapp Jr sworn in as San Ignacio/Santa Elena Mayor

By BBN Staff: The three-term mayor of San Ignacio and Santa Elena, Earl Trapp Jr. and returning town councilor Bernadette ‘Bernie’ Fernandez were sworn in this morning at the San Ignacio and Santa Elena Town Hall.

Opposition UDP Leader Patrick Faber was present for the swearing-in ceremony in San Ignacio.

Trapp and Fernandez were the only two United Democratic Party candidates in all of Belize who got elected to office. That’s two out of 58, since all towns have seven posts each, the City of Belmopan, seven, and Belize, nine.

Trapp won Cayo, as San Ignacio and Santa Elena are popularly known, by 61 votes (3424 to 3363) over the PUP’s Ramon ‘Monchi’ Quiroz.

Quiroz was nearly the least popular of his party only getting more votes that one of the PUP 7.

Fernandez got more votes than two of the PUP candidates, one of which had enough votes to get elected.

The five PUP councilors were sworn in on Friday in what the UDP-Belize Facebook page called “a hurried and haphazard event.”

The PUP councilors are Zahir Figueroa, Aaron Albert Mai, Shirlene Neal, Matthew Preston Silva and Omar Lucio Rodriguez.

The new team makes history in the Twin Towns being the first, split elected slate to serve in 24 years.
