Public Service Union reaches out to membership over proposed salary cuts

Posted: Tuesday, March 9, 2021. 8:53 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Following the Government of Belize’s (GOB’s) proposal of a 10 percent salary cut and increment freezes for the next three years, the Public Service Union  (PSU) has reached out to its membership to hear their views.

The PSU is polling its members for their opinions as the union prepares to meet with GOB on Wednesday, alongside the Association of Public Sector Senior Managers (APSSM), Belize National Teacher’s Union (BNTU), and the National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB). The union held a zoom meeting with its members on Saturday, March 6, and is scheduled to hold another on Tuesday, in preparation for the final decision.

The other unions have been engaging their members as well.

As a good-faith measure on the cost-saving proposals, GOB would encourage the National Bank of Belize (NBB) and the Development Finance Corporation (DFC) to make facilities available for teachers and public officers for preferential rates on mortgages.
