By Aaron Humes, Belmopan: With the Senate agreeing to defer the second reading of the Public Contracts Commission Bill, the Senate only debated a single bill, an Amendment to the Central Bank Act to provide for economic programs in light of Belize’s current “unusual and exigent” circumstances.
Leader of Government Business Senator Eamon Courtenay said this was necessary in order to begin economic recovery for the country.
He emphasized that there would be no direct lending to any businesses or individuals but more in the vein of economic policy proposals.
And the Minister of Finance would be limited to simply approving, if he agrees, the proposals of the independent Central Bank Board but not otherwise interfering with them.
